Valsa John, a woman who hailed from Ernakulam district of Kerala State, who was working for an anti-displacement movement against a private company at Pachwara village in Pakur district, was put to death by some unidentified men. She was beaten up with sticks and then axed to death at around 11:30 pm in the night. Pakur Superintendent of Police Amarnath Khanna told thereporters that an FIR has been lodged against the unknown men.
He added that Valsa aged 52 years was staying in the village for about 12 years and led a protest against coal mining by Panem Coal Company Ltd three years ago.
According to the locals, the stir began after the villagers feared the displacement following coal mining.
The SP added that she was out of station for a few days and by the time she returned back some villagers had protested. And said only after conducting probe into the matter they can give more details on the same.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, V.K. Pandey said the police suspect that reports of her subsequent withdrawal from the stir might have been the reason behind the incident.
