Man gets death for rape and murder of woman

Thrissur Fast Track Court on Friday sentenced a 30 year old man to death for rapping and murdering a young woman after pushing her out of a running train, holding that he committed the crime in a diabolic manner deserving no lenience. The court gave the death sentence citing the case to be one among the rare of the rarest in nature.
The Judge K. N. Raveendra Babu who pronounced the judgement in a crowded court observed that the 23 year old woman was brutually rapped and murdered and therefore said that the accused Govindachamy deserved the highest punishment he could get.
The Judge had on October 31st held the man hailing fromVirddhachalam in Tamil Nadu guilty of offences under IPC Ss. 302 (Murder),  376 (Rape), 394 (Robbery) and other counts.
Though the security was highly under control and tightened taking into consideration the public interest in the case, the van in which the convict was taken out after the proceedings was stoned by a crowd of general public several times. Govindachamy was taken to the Kannur Central Prison.
The murder of Soumya this year had sparked widespread public outcry over the safety of women who are travelling in trains.
According to the Prosecution side, the accused Govindachamy had assaulted and pushed the victim travelling in a deserted ladie's compartment of  the Kochi-Shornur Passenger train on February 1st this year.
Govindachamy, a tramp, had assaulted her after the train left the Vallathol Railway Station , a few minutes before she was to get down in her stop.
After she fell on the track side, he pursued her and dragged her to a dark isolated spot wherein he rapped her brutually after which he hit her head with a stone.
Though Soumya was rushed to the hospital by a passerby, she lost the battle of life and death on February 6th .
The victim, was an employee of a shopping mall in Kochi and was on her way back to home at Manjakkad near Shornur and the tragedy occurred a day before her betrothal.
The trial in the case also showcased little surprises as some Mumbai-based lawyers arrived to defend the accused, who was a vagrant allegedly wanted in other cases in Tamil Nadu.
This has also arouse certain allegations that a mafia which thrives by committing theft and crimes around railway stations was trying to save Govindhachamy.
