Supreme Court begins hearing on convict's appeals in 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case

The Supreme Court from today beagn final hearing of a bunch of appeals filed by convicts as well as the CBI in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case in which 12 persons were awarded death penalty and 78 others were sentenced to varying terms ranging from three years to life imprisonment.

A bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B.S Chauhan started hearing the 110 petitions filed on the same matter, including the petition filed the film star Sanjay Dutt, who was sentenced to six year term in jail but is out now on bail pending his appeal in the Supreme Court.

CBI, however has opted not to appeal against Dutt who was acquitted on the conspiracy charge in the blasts but was eventually awarded six years imprisonment  by a designated court for being in illegal possession of arms.

For the first time, the Supreme Court Judges used the desktops during the proceedings to brouse over 4000 pages judgement of the designated TADA Court which had awarded death sentence to 12 people out of which one person died during the pendency of the case.

The judgement was passed by the designated court between July and October 2007 on the trial relating to the serial blasts which had rocked Mumbai on March 12-13, 1993 killing over 200 persons and injuring around 713 people.

 During the pendency of the appeal in the Apex Court, one of the accused named Mohd Iqbal, facing death sentence, passed away and hence his appeal stands abated. Also three other convicts died during the pndency of the appeal.

While ten others who were facing death penalty challenged their conviction, CBI has also filed cross appeals against 40 other convicts, seeking enhancement of their punishment.
