How To Enable HDMI Video Mirroring On iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G

While the iPad 2 comes with out-of-the-box support for video mirroring over HDMI or VGA, the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G don’t. The interesting thing is that it has been proven that video mirroring works with the latter devices; maybe not as well as the iPad 2 but the fact is, they work and Apple purposefully has left out this functionality. We’re going to get that functionality back on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G today; follow our guide after the break!

How To Enable Video Mirroring on iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G
Before we begin, you must ensure that your iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G is jailbroken.
You can follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.5 using Redsn0w (or PwnageTool), or on iOS 4.3.4 using Redsn0w or PwnageTool (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), or iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool,Sn0wbreeze & JailbreakMe (that last one being the easiest). If you’re already using iOS 5 beta, you can jailbreak it using tools like Redsn0w (for Mac and Windows), orSn0wbreeze.

Step 1: Ensure you have a jailbroken iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G.
Step 2: You will need a program to access the root filesystem. For this, you can use iFile which is available on Cydia under the BigBoss repo.
Step 3: Launch iFile. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app
Step 4: Once inside Springboard.app, you must open up one of the following .plist files with Property List Viewer depending on which iOS device you’re on:

• If you’re on an iPod touch: N81AP.plist
• If you’re on an iPhone 4: N90AP.plist

Step 5: Once the required file has been opened with Property List Viewer. Tap oncapabilities and add the following by tapping on +:
Under Name, type: “display-mirroring” and choose Boolean under Type. Now tap Create.

Step 6: Once created, scroll down to display-mirroring and slide it to ON.

Step 7: Restart your iPhone 4/iPod touch 4G. Your iOS device should now be ready to mirror everything on screen using an HDMI or VGA adapter.

While Sn0wbreeze 2.7.1 can already jailbreak iOS 4.2.8 on Verizon iPhone 4, the problem is that it is for Windows users only. If you happen to be a Mac user, and want to untether jailbreak your Verizon iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.8, you can do so now with this PwnageTool bundle.

The instructions for jailbreaking iOS 4.2.8 using custom PwnageTool bundle are exactly similar to the ones already covered for iOS 4.3.3 (GSM iPhone 4). iPhone geiger counter shows up on Kickstarter, goal is to track radiation in Japan

There have been so many rumors about the iPhone 5, it’s difficult to keep them all straight, but those talented French artists at Nowhere Else have laid them out for us here in beautiful style. Be sure to check the blue progress bars for the likelihood of each one of these rumors to actually occur. They look mostly accurate to us, with one exception: After last night’s revelations about Sony’s involvement with the next iPhone’s image sensor from Sony’s Sir Howard Stringer, that 50% chance of a better camera seems like it ought to be around 80 to 90%.

iPhone 5 Leaked !

Two weeks ago, we published a report about some of the details of iPhone 5 leaked straight from the component suppliers of iPhone. According to the report, iPhone 5 will feature a 4 inch display. Later in that week, we presented you with a mockup of iPhone with a 4 inch display in same encasement. Quite honestly, that was one of the ugliest products Apple may ever produce and that is what led to the debate if Apple will be using the same encasement or larger.

A Chinese reseller of Apple’s parts has recently published an image of the digitizer panel of what it appears to be 5th generation iPhone’s. The part looks similar to that of iPhone 4 but with a larger cut for display to support 4 inch screen. If the leak is authentic, this may mean Apple is looking forward to fit the screen in the same encasement and your iPhones are probably going to look like this (I am not going to buy one if it does).

Reports also suggest that Apple has invested about $4B in some technological development which we are speculating to be in display technology to feature a larger screen on same encasement by getting the display to the edge of the phone. My only wish is they make it look lesser ugly than it does in the mock up.

Apple iOS v. Google Android

The Apple iOS, which runs on its iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, has a flaw in how it reads PDF documents that makes it easier to hack. This flaw is exploited by JailbreakMe, a one-click site that makes it easy for anyone without any real tech skills to hack into their own iPhone.

The flaw lets JailbreakMe open up an Apple operating system, and enables the user to load non Apple-approved applications on to an Apple device. JailbreakMe brought the security risk to light, finally causing Apple to release security updates for iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone and iPod touch and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad this week. (By the way, doesn’t this sound a lot like the same security flaw that Adobe learned about in late July?)

But the threat to the iOS is not the operating system itself but in its third-party software, such as the Safari browser, QuickTime, Java, or apps from Adobe. Nonetheless, it’s Apple that bears the responsibility for monitoring security, since it’s made the choice to use the software and package it for users. This is a weird conundrum since Apple believes in the “walled garden” approach to applications. Shouldn’t it be patrolling the garden more?

Android has similar issues, such as an innocuous Jackeey wallpaper application that retrieved personal information from each phone that downloaded its application. Neither JailBreakMe nor Jackeey were hacking into anyone’s phone; however, their code could be used for evil rather than good, which worries most security experts.

So how does Apple’s security for its mobile operating system stack up against that of Google’s Android, the biggest competitor?

1. Walled Garden v. the Wild Jungle

The biggest problem with Apple’s security is its walled garden philosophy, which relies on the wisdom of Apple approving applications rather than by consensus or the individual user. While many Apple fans say this decreases iOS problems, others say that it actually contributes to them by closing a door on the application after it has gained entrance into the App Store. Apple’s gatekeeping system on its walled garden is also virtually unknown, and it may also prove to give a false sense of security.

The Android Market, on the other hand, resembles a swap meet. The applications are available without restriction, and are monitored and reviewed by users themselves, including analyzing code–something not offered by Apple. While some worry that the free-for-all will be a security risk, at least one security research firm, Lookout, says Android’s applications are less problematic than Apple’s.

2. Pig-in-the-Poke v. the Test-Drive

Another way that app security for the Linux-based Android platform is better is that each application must disclose to the user what part of the device it plans to use and how. Google also publicly talks about operating a “honeypot,” or a computer not hooked up to all parts of its system, which monitors Android applications for malicious programs. Such open discussion is not part of Apple’s corporate climate, users frequently don’t know what they are buying until damage is done–but if they’re lucky, they found out about their vulnerability through JailbreakMe.

3. Freedom v. Establishment

With Google’s new App Inventor, you don’t have to be a software engineer to create an application for the anything-goes Android platform. Not so at Apple. It takes an experienced software developer to create anything on the iOS, and it’s up to the corporate honchos at Apple to approve it. As for security in the “walled garden,” there are no guarantees.

While the iPhone has some important security features, like sophisticated memory protection and a required digitally signed code requirement, security analysts say Android’s protection is stronger because of its source openness and the way it isolates applications which causes less harm to users. While business owners should block or limit access to applications to company machines to protect their data, the Android platform may prove just a little safer.

HTC Desire Z VS Nokia E7

Just last week, we run an article on the launch of HTC Desire Z – the new Slider Android smartphone from HTC. Instead of doing a comparison between iPhone 4 and HTC Desire Z (which is oh-so-boring!), the team decided to run a comparison between the Nokia E7 and HTC Desire Z – which are released at almost the same time.

Let’s take a look what both devices have to offer.

Dimensions and Power

The Desire Z sports a 3.7-inch, 480×800 pixel capacitive S-LCD touchscreen while the E7 feature a 4 inch screen with Nokia’s ClearBlack Display technology. The Nokia E7 measures 123.7×62.4×13.6 mm, slightly larger than the HTC Desire Z with 119×60.4×14.16mm. The HTC Desire Z weighs 180g whereas the E7 weighs 176g. Display wise, the E7 wins with a bigger screen and richer color due to Nokia's ClearBlack Display technology. Dimensions wise, both phones can fit comfortably into your pocket and nothing much separates their weights.

OS Comparisons

The new Symbian^3 vs Android 2.2 Froyo - now, where do we begin? Well, we know that Android 2.2 comes with support for a large variety of apps, allows the smartphone to be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot and offers Flash 10 support.

The Symbian^3 features a wonderful email UI, allowing you to quickly swap up to 10 mailboxes and any of your email folders.

However, Android, coupled with HTC Sense UI in the Desire Z, provides the smartphone with new features like the ability to access maps without being on the web, the intelligence to adjust its phone ring volume depending on whether the phone in a bag or pocket and providing a stream of communication information for your friends. You can also set a self destruct button that allows you to clear your device immediately upon misplacing your smartphone.

Features

Both phones are equipped with a slide out QWERTY keyboard but the Z hinge design in the HTC Desire Z gives it a slight advantage in terms of usability over the Nokia E7. This design also allows users of the Desire Z to access the top layer of the QWERTY slide out keyboard much more easily.

The Nokia E7 has better camera functionality with its 8 megapixel camera and on-board picture and video editing application. The Desire Z only comes with a 5 megapixel camera.

For internal storage, the Desire Z is quite low with 1.5GB of internal memory whereas the Nokia E7 sports 16GB internal memory. However, upon saying that, both devices can support memory extension through microSD slot up to 32GB.

For applications wise, the Nokia Ovi Store is a far cry from the Android Market.

Conclusion

Although the Nokia E7 is a stunning device compared to the old Symbian, our vote still goes to HTC Desire Z with its innovative Z hinge design and accessibility to a wide range of Android apps. Ultimately though, it must be emphasized that choosing between these 2 phones will still be based on individual personal preference. Perhaps, the user should also take into consideration the handset prices offer by the different service providers to determine which smartphone provides more value for money.

HTC Desire HD vs iPhone 4

Following today's unveiling of the HTC Desire HD, it's clear that this new smartphone is going to the give Apple's iPhone 4 a run for its money. Whether you're new to this smartphone malarkey, or you're considering upgrading your current handset, these are both handsets that you need to consider. If you're already a die-hard fan of either brand then you probably don't need our help to decide. However, if you've yet to pledge your alleigance to Team Apple or Team Android, then read on for our head to head comparison.

Dimensions

While both phones sport tidy, compact designs, the HTC is considerably larger than the iPhone, and although that means a larger screen, it also means that it's not quite as pocket-friendly. The Desire HD is also heavier than the iPhone and while the 27g difference in weight is unlikely to make that much difference, it's an important issue when it comes to mobile devices and one which makes Apple the winner in this category.

When it comes to touchscreen smartphones, the display is one of the biggest stand-offs. At 4.3 inches, the Desire HD's screen is considerably bigger than that of the iPhone. However, the higher resolution offered by the Apple goes a long way to making up for its relatively diminutive screen. What's more, the iPhone's Retina display has been designed to replicate reading on paper. Bright, shiny paper, but paper, nevertheless. On balance, the Apple wins this one.

Engine Room

The two smartphone contenders have a fairly similar spec under the hood, with both sporting 1Gz processors. While the iPhone has Apple's ARM Cortex A8, the Desire uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform. Though different, they both offer the sort of high-end performance you'd expect in a quality smartphone. However,  the Desire HD offers a fair bit more RAM than the iPhone, and that's why we're handing it the win on this point.

If you want top quality photos and video footage then you should really opt for a camera or camcorders of some sort. However, if you're just after a phone that can take half-decent snaps and film at a moment's notice, then both these handsets offer decent performance.

As predicted by the online rumour mill, the Desire HD does indeed have am 8MP camera, along with auto focus and a dual LED flash, and will offer a variety of effects such as fisheye and vignettes. As you can probably guess from the phone's name, it has also been equipped with the ability for 720p high-def video capture.

Apple finally relented to the calls of 3GS owners, and introduced an LED flash to the 5MP camera, along with a better sensor and lens. It also introduced the ability to capture video in 720p high-def resolution. Although fairly evenly matched in this area, we think that HTC deserves to take this round thanks to its 8MP camera.

Storage

The Desire HD wins this one just, mainly because while the HTC technically has less onboard memory, you get the ability to expand it and swap out micro SD cards, where you can't with the iPhone.

This is possibly the hardest category in which to pick a winner, as both phones offer awesome operating systems. With the introduction of iOS 4.1, the iPhone has gained a few extra strings to its bow including Game Center capability for social gaming and HDR photography that combines several images into a single picture.

Android is fast catching up with iOS 4 in terms of apps, and although we still think that the iPhone interface is far more clear and intuitive, Android offers more flexibility. The Desire HD has been blessed with an updated version of HTC Sense which, it is claimed, will power up in 10 seconds and lets your filter your mail and also enables pre-caching of maps saving you waiting around for them to download. The update also brings with it HTCSense.com which will let you store and browse messages on your computer, help you to locate your phone when it's lost around the house and remotely forward your calls or erase your phone data, should you get your phone nicked.

At the risk of upsetting all the iOS 4 fans, we're going to declare the HTC the victor in this round (and then we're going to duck and cover).

The Desire HD will be available in Europe in October, with Vodafone confirmed as launch partner,  and although no pricing has yet been confirmed, the blogosphere puts it somewhere around the £415 mark for a SIM free handset.

In contrast, there's no getting away from the fact that the iPhone is very expensive, and we only hope that Steve Jobs is secretly donating to charity as enthusiastically as some of his comtemporaries. A SIM free handset will currently cost you dearly, with the best deals coming in at around £570. For that reason, we think that the HTC will probably have the edge is this category.



Conclusions

This is a tricky one, as we're looking at two very different pieces of ground-breaking technology. However, if pushed to pick a winner we have to go with the HTC on this occasion thanks to its flexibilty, larger screen and cheaper price. That's not to say that the iPhone is dead in the water. Apple's handset offers a great user experience that many will find easier to manage than HTC's Android-based phone. While we've looked in detail at the specs that were available to us, the proof is in the pudding, and we'll get stuck into the Desire HD with a full review as soon as we can.
