Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Using The New Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b

Redsn0w, the regularly reliable jailbreaking tool for Iphone, iPad and iPod touch users, has just been updated to version 0.9.9b9b, and brings with it a couple of handy finishing touches.

• native support for 5.0.1 (no need to point redsn0w at 5.0 IPSW or use command-line args).  Support automatically extends to all of redsn0w’s various functions: “Jailbreak”, “Just boot”, “Fetch blobs”, “Stitch blobs”, “Recovery Fix”
• iBooks fixed in 5.0 and 5.0.1.  This is a targeted fix that doesn’t remove entire sandbox mechanism.  5.x users already using redsn0w “Just Boot” can just use the new version without redoing entire jailbreak again
• 3GS old-bootrom owners can now create custom IPSWs without blobs
• ultrasn0w compatibility update (i.e. same baseband requirements) for 5.0.1 will be available on Cydia Monday
• support for newer 8GB iPhone4 (which until now had problems with “Fetch blobs”).  Thanks to @JKjeepnJeff for loaning us one of these newer i4 units for testing!
• allows Windows users (not just OS X users) to use the “Custom” button to create IPSWs without baseband updates.
• accommodates APTickets in 5.x (until next Apple countermove).  APTickets are crypto-verified before submitting to Cydia, just like the main blobs.  Cydia server support for sending back the APTickets is upcoming.  For now, use stitched IPSWs for 5.x.  Due to APTickets, stitched 5.x IPSWs now require user to start in “Pwned DFU” mode
• Support added for stitching 4.x blobs to iPad2-GSM IPSWs.  Similar to @notcom’s TinyCFW but doesn’t require lots of RAM or a TSS-assisted restore. Won’t work for iPad2 5.x blobs (or iPhone4S at all) until a bootrom-level exploit is out
• top line now shows whether (and where) a redsn0w update is available, or if the version being run is the latest.  Uses DNS TXT record to alleviate any concerns about snooping
• no 5.1 beta support at this time (major apps like Cydia are not yet compatible)
• @pod2g has been doing a great job porting his 5.x untether…check his blog for updates!
• Owners of newer 3GS iPhones must not flash the Ipad baseband.  The iPad baseband will not work on 3GS iPhones built later than 2011 week 35.  You have a week 35 or later device if your serial # starts with xx135.
• This is still a tethered jailbreak for all except old-bootrom 3GS users.

How To Enable HDMI Video Mirroring On iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G

While the iPad 2 comes with out-of-the-box support for video mirroring over HDMI or VGA, the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G don’t. The interesting thing is that it has been proven that video mirroring works with the latter devices; maybe not as well as the iPad 2 but the fact is, they work and Apple purposefully has left out this functionality. We’re going to get that functionality back on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G today; follow our guide after the break!

How To Enable Video Mirroring on iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G
Before we begin, you must ensure that your iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G is jailbroken.
You can follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.5 using Redsn0w (or PwnageTool), or on iOS 4.3.4 using Redsn0w or PwnageTool (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), or iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool,Sn0wbreeze & JailbreakMe (that last one being the easiest). If you’re already using iOS 5 beta, you can jailbreak it using tools like Redsn0w (for Mac and Windows), orSn0wbreeze.

Step 1: Ensure you have a jailbroken iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4G.
Step 2: You will need a program to access the root filesystem. For this, you can use iFile which is available on Cydia under the BigBoss repo.
Step 3: Launch iFile. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app
Step 4: Once inside Springboard.app, you must open up one of the following .plist files with Property List Viewer depending on which iOS device you’re on:

• If you’re on an iPod touch: N81AP.plist
• If you’re on an iPhone 4: N90AP.plist

Step 5: Once the required file has been opened with Property List Viewer. Tap oncapabilities and add the following by tapping on +:
Under Name, type: “display-mirroring” and choose Boolean under Type. Now tap Create.

Step 6: Once created, scroll down to display-mirroring and slide it to ON.

Step 7: Restart your iPhone 4/iPod touch 4G. Your iOS device should now be ready to mirror everything on screen using an HDMI or VGA adapter.

Apple releases iOS 4.3.2 for iPhone | iPad | iPod touch| iOS 4.2.7 for Verizon iPhone

Apple has released iOS 4.3.2 for iPhone 4 (AT&T/GSM ), iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch 4, and iPod touch 3. iOS 4.2.7 for iPhone 4 (Verizon) has also been released (those branches remain forked).

Both versions contain security updates. iOS 4.3.2 also fixes issues with FaceTime freezes and blanks, and problems connecting to 3G networks on iPad.

Jailbreakers are reminded to steer clear unless they want to be reverted to a stock device.

How The Apple TV is Winning Over My Living Room

 Purchased my first Apple computer shortly after they made the switch to Intel processors. It was the first time that I had purchased an Apple product and shortly after picked up iPod, after iPod, after iPod. The iPod touch led to the iPhone and before I knew it I had countless Apple products in my home. But one item from the Apple collection that was missing from my home was the Apple TV. The first generation model seemed interesting, but its design, approach to the living room, and cost led me to want to structure a media center with the Mac Mini before I’d consider purchasing an Apple TV to manage my living room.

Apple realized that their “hobby” wasn’t having the success that they hoped for and decided to shift things a bit this past year. The new Apple TV featured media streaming instead of hard drives and was offered to customers at a significantly lower price. For Christmas we decided to add the Apple TV to our product collection. At first my family was a bit skeptical. They didn’t really see a use for the product and it wasn’t used much. But with time that changed.

We started streaming family videos to our television from our computers and we became more comfortable with the interface and simple remote settings. My wife started exploring Netflix on the device and found she preferred watching shows and movies from Netflix on the Apple TV to the app available to us on the Xbox 360. The more we used the device, the more we found ourselves renting movies from the iTunes Store and downloading children shows for our kids. I’d honestly say that almost everyday we use our Apple TV as much as our DVR.

How did Apple do it? They offered a simple and powerful tool that brings us services we like to use and made it easier than competing platforms. Essentially, to win over our television and video usage, Apple followed the same approach they use for all their devices. Over time, we found we naturally preferred to use the Apple TV to other options because of overall positive user experience the device offers.

Apple has done it again and I believe that they are just getting started in the living room. The Apple TV is a steal at $99 and I imagine with future software updates and continued compatibility with the iPhone, iPad, and iPods we’ll find ourselves interacting with the media device more and more.
