Apple Planning To Launch A Major Product On 10th Retail Anniversary Event

News coming out of various sources and BGR point to Apple launching a new product to fit in with the 10th anniversary of its retail stores.
With the anniversary coming on Thursday 19th, all Apple Stores will be undergoing special training, with some staff members working through Saturday night and into Sunday. New point of sale is being shipped to stores too, with all literature under lock and key until the time comes.
BGR has some information from a trusted source, with the highlights being:
    - An overnight shift of around 15 employees is required for the Saturday night, with all mobile phones to be locked away and NDAs signed by all employees.
    - Black window curtains will be in place while the stores are made ready to prevent prying eyes from getting an early glimpse of the work being carried out.
    - Gigabytes of training information have been downloaded to stores with passworded files. Passwords will not be provided until a later date.
No word yet on what Apple has planned or if it extends to its online presence but we’ll be camped out ready to find out!
    Any guesses?

Stampr Adds Timestamps And More To Native iPhone Camera App

Apple’s iPhone 4 has become one of the world’s favorite cameras over the last year. A cursory look at the photo stats from Flickr shows just how popular the iPhone 4 is when it comes to taking snaps, with huge numbers of photographs uploaded daily.

If you’re a budding iPhone photographer and have a hankering for the good old days when photos had timestamps then you’re in luck.
A new Cydia tweak, Stampr, brings timestamps to the iPhone’s camera app. Not only can you now have a handy reminder of the date and time you took the photo, but you can also add custom text via the app’s settings. Also in there you’ll find options for changing the text size and color – plenty for you to make your timestamps look just the way you want them for the maximum shot of nostalgia.

One nice feature that may get overlooked is the way Stampr actually saves two photos to your camera roll – one with the timestamp and one without. Useful for those that might want a pristine, unaltered version of their photos for editing, printing or distributing later.
You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to install it. Follow our step by step guide to jailbreak your iPhoneiPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.1 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (untethered | tethered) on Mac, or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.2 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (tethered), or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0wPwnageToolSn0wbreeze if you haven’t already.
Stampr is available from the iOS jailbreak store, Cydia and costs absolutely nothing.
    Bargain!

FB Photos: Download App Downloads Photos From Facebook To Your iPhone

Facebook is fast becoming the contact list, communication tool and photo album for the entire world, and with people dumping thousands upon thousands of their photos into the social network it’s inevitable they might want to get them back out again. Enter FB Photos Download.
FB Photos Download does exactly what it says on the tin, but giving people a simple iOS app that they can use to pull individual photos – or indeed entire albums – from inside Facebook.
Available for just $0.99 for a limited time, FB Photos Download not only offers to download all the photos you could possibly want, but it also does it without degrading the (probably already degraded!) image quality.

With Facebook’s 600million plus users this is the kind of app people will begin to need, and at just $0.99 there’s no reason to not give it a try.
Check out our iPhone Apps Gallery and iPad Apps Gallery to explore more apps for your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

iPhone: 4 Case Comes With A Removable Battery

One of the many complaints leveled at the iPhone design is the closed case, with no user-serviceable batteries. This has spawned multiple cases with inbuilt power supplies for extending the iPhone’s sometimes anaemic battery life. Granted the iPhone 4 is a great improvement over past models in the power department, but every little helps. But what if you don’t want a case with the added bulk of a battery?

Enter the new case and smart battery from Third Rail. The two-part system offers the best of both worlds – a slim iPhone 4 case with an attachable battery pack for when you need that little bit more juice – 1250mAh worth of juice to be exact. The $90 kit consists of one case and one smart battery, with further batteries available for $40 each. If you do happen to buy two or more batteries, there’s the added benefit of being able to stack them to create either a power hub or to charge them both at the same time.

The Third Rail™ System includes the Slim Case for iPhone 4 with a slide-on Smart Battery. Understanding that your daily power needs may vary, The System allows you to add power when you need it and remove it when you don’t!
The Slim Case is a sleek, everyday protective case with a high quality, soft-touch feel. The Smart Battery can also function as a standalone backup battery to power other devices via USB Adapter (included).
In this world where we’re all carrying around multiple devices the smart battery can also be used as a charger for almost anything thanks to its micro-USB port.
With many put off of traditional battery-increasing cases by their bulk, the Third Rail case and smart battery offer a great alternative to carrying around a power cord and sticking near a power outlet.

iChair for iPad 2 looking for a | little Kickstarter love

In the last year, just about every iPad case or stand has made it to my office for a review. While I don't always write them up, I often show the products on TUAW TV Live. It doesn't matter what I'm showing; there's always someone for whom the product is perfect, and a lot of people liked the case that I'm writing about here. For people who want the protection of a case and the convenience of the stand, the iChair (no, not thehelmsman's chair from Norway) is one of the better designs I've seen.
We received one of the iPad cases and an iPhone 4 case earlier this month for review, and while the iPhone case was inadvertently used as a giveaway for our TUAW meetups, I still have the iPad case and decided to give it a try. Vindi Sedey, the CEO of iChair, is trying to get funding on Kickstarter to start manufacturing the iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch versions of the combo case and stand. At this point, he's quite a bit away from his goal of $15,000 worth of funding, but given the quality of the iChair for the original iPad, I thought I'd give the product a little push here on TUAW.

Check out the review of the original iChair on the next page, and if you like what you see, help out a young entrepreneur as a backer for his project.

    Features

The iChair for iPad (US$49.00) is a slider-type case made of a grippable hard plastic material on the outside, and lined with a soft velour material on the inside. That inside liner is unique to the iChair; I've found that many other cases of this type retain the hard material on the inside as well, and for some reason it often collects dust that ends up on the back of the iPad. The iChair material tends to remove the dust from the iPad, and I've found in testing that it also seems to keep dust from accumulating behind the iPad in the first place.
While the iChair is made of black plastic, the top is replaceable with an included extra cap. In the package I received, the second cap was a nice dark blue to create a two-tone case. When purchasing the iChair, there's a choice of the blue cap or a white one. The package also contains a screen protector to keep the iPad display from scratches. I personally like the thin design of the iChair. It doesn't add a lot of bulk to the iPad, unlike many of the other iPad stands and cases we've reviewed.
So where does the iChair get its name? From the fact that thanks to two small locking plastic tabs that snap out from the body of the case, the iChair can "sit up" in landscape or portrait orientation. When you're planning on doing some hardcore typing on the iPad, the iChair props up into a slight slant that's perfect for tapping on the virtual keyboard.

    Hands-on Video

To show you the iChair in action, I put together a quick two-minute video showing what it looks like and how it works.

    Conclusion

The iChair for iPad is thin, sturdy, and useful. At $49, it beats many competitive products on price, and the extra top cap gives the iChair a nice custom feel. If you'd like to see this product for iPad 2, be sure to visit the iChair Kickstarter page and consider backing the project

    The iPad 2 !

Apple has just made its second-generation iPad official! It features a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip and, finally, cameras, both on the front and rear. The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, while power requirements have been kept the same.

Battery life is, consequently, unaltered, with Apple promising 10 hours. Pricing, too, has been left unchanged, starting at $499 for a 16GB WiFi-only iPad 2 and stretching up to $829 for a WiFi + 3G SKU with 64GB of storage. The new tablet will come with an HDMI output capable of 1080p -- which will set you back $39 for the requisite dongle, called an Apple Digital AV Adapter -- but there will sadly be no rumblings of Thunderbolt connectivity here. What you will get is an enlarged speaker grille on the back, as expected, and the same 1024 x 768 resolution and IPS LCD screen technology as on the original iPad.

Update: We've gotten our first hands-on with the iPad 2 and, boy oh boy, it's fast!

720p video recording at 30fps will be on tap from the rear-facing camera, which can also do a 5x digital zoom if you're into that kind of thing, whereas the front-facing imager will record at a more modest VGA resolution, also at 30fps.

There's a new cover for the device, which is best defined by Steve Jobs himself: "We designed the case right alongside the product. It's not a case -- it's a cover." Basically, it's a magnetic flap that protects the front and automatically wakes and puts the device to sleep according to whether it's open or closed. Guess we know what that proximity sensor was about now. These Smart Covers will cost $39 in plastic or $69 if you opt for leather.

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than its predecessor, at a mind-melting 8.8mm, and a little lighter at just over 600g, while paintjob options have been expanded: you'll get a choice between white and black. It'll be available on both AT&T and Verizon, and all variants start shipping on March 11th. Apple Retail Stores will start sales at the unusual hour of 5PM, which will probably make online pre-orders the fastest way to get yours.

In terms of new software, Apple's launching iOS 4.3 alongside the new iPad and bringing with it much improved Safari performance as well as FaceTime, Photo Booth, iMovie and GarageBand (the latter two costing $4.99 a piece) apps specifically for the newly camera-enriched iPad. Personal Hotspot capabilities are also arriving in the latest version of the OS, but they'll be exclusive to the iPhone 4, so you won't be able to share your 3G iPad's connection. The minimum compatible version of iTunes for the new iPad 2 will be the freshly released 10.2.

You'll find Apple's official PR and some slick promo videos below, or you can keep your mouse clicking and check out our first hands-on with the iPad 2.

    iPhone 5 Leaked !

Two weeks ago, we published a report about some of the details of iPhone 5 leaked straight from the component suppliers of iPhone. According to the report, iPhone 5 will feature a 4 inch display. Later in that week, we presented you with a mockup of iPhone with a 4 inch display in same encasement. Quite honestly, that was one of the ugliest products Apple may ever produce and that is what led to the debate if Apple will be using the same encasement or larger.

A Chinese reseller of Apple’s parts has recently published an image of the digitizer panel of what it appears to be 5th generation iPhone’s. The part looks similar to that of iPhone 4 but with a larger cut for display to support 4 inch screen. If the leak is authentic, this may mean Apple is looking forward to fit the screen in the same encasement and your iPhones are probably going to look like this (I am not going to buy one if it does).

Reports also suggest that Apple has invested about $4B in some technological development which we are speculating to be in display technology to feature a larger screen on same encasement by getting the display to the edge of the phone. My only wish is they make it look lesser ugly than it does in the mock up.

    iPad 2 review

To say Apple's iPad 2 is an easy tablet to review is somewhat of an understatement. The device, a follow up to last year's wildly successful (and currently market-defining) iPad, is nearly identical when it comes to software, and though improved, closely related on the hardware side as well. With a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display, the general size and shape of the device has remained the same, and
