Verizon sells Galaxy Tab for $599.99

Verizon sells Galaxy Tab for $599.99

Well, we finally have a price on this thing! America's largest carrierVerizon Wireless  has announced plans to sell Samsung's Galaxy Tab for... $599.99. The 3G, Android 2.2-based unit (which will be loaded with V CAST apps, of course) will hit retail on November 11th, and since it's being sold at full price, a data plan (which starts at $20 per month for 1GB) is completely optional. It looks like customers will have some fairly strong choices on Big Red, considering that the impossible-to-ignore iPad is being made available in Verizon's stores as well. Tough decisions are ahead for potential tablet buyers -- but we're sure you'll do what's right. Check out the full press release below, and good luck!Verizon wireless

Version Galaxy Tab

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Tab offers a new level of temptation, and a new level of frustration, for would-be Android tablet owners. Verizon's hardware is identical to Sprint's (and slightly inferior to T-Mobile's), and its $599 price is the same as those carriers' no-contract rates. It's a solid device, but Verizon loads up its tablet with lots of potentially useful software, most of which fails, some disastrously.

There are five models of the Galaxy Tab coming to the U.S., and this is PCMag's third Galaxy Tab review. For basics on the Galaxy Tab, check out our review of the Sprint Galaxy Tab ($399-599, 3.5 stars). Verizon's hardware is almost exactly the same as Sprint's, except that the device has a black back instead of a white one. Otherwise, it's the same responsive and powerful Android tablet with its 1GHz processor, dual cameras, Android 2.2 "Froyo" and 2GB of memory plus an included 16GB memory card. (T-Mobile's version has more memory: 16GB internal, plus a memory card slot.)

All the Galaxy Tabs should get roughly the same battery life as they all use the same 4,000 mAh battery, but I've achieved varying results based on how hard they have to run their 3G radios in midtown Manhattan. With one e-mail account pushing in the background I got 8 hours, 52 minutes of video playback time on the Verizon Tab, reflecting Verizon's excellent network coverage (and thus the Tab not having to push its radio too hard.) To compare, the Sprint model only lasted 6 hours and 32 minutes.

Verizon's pricing plans are some of the best available if you want to use 1GB to 3GB of data per month without taking on a contract. That's been the sweet spot for iPad users so far, and Tab users should consume a similar amount of data. To compare Verizon's and Sprint's pricing plans, check out our chart of Samsung Galaxy Tab prices on five U.S. carriers.

Then there's the software. That's where Verizon really tries, and where Verizon fails, at least for now.

Samsung Galaxy Tab vs. Apple iPad: Specs Compared

See Samsung’s up-and-coming Android tablet measured up next to the reigning champ, as we compare Samsung’s Galaxy Tab vs. the Apple iPad from a specifications perspective.

What the heck is a tablet computer?

Mainstream America might never have known before Apple bushwhacked its way through technical barriers, misconceptions and skeptics stake its claim on tablet computing with the iPad. The breakthrough tablet, which Apple still struggles to keep in stock, dodged mistakes made by previous tablets by making computing with your fingers easy, relatively inexpensive , and above all, fun.

But no company can dominate an entire market forever – even one that essentially created it. Having eyed Apple enviously for months, other companies are now attempting to elbow their way in on the tablet space. And Samsung is among the first to the table with the Galaxy Tab. Can the supersized version of the company’s successful Galaxy S smartphones compete? We stacked it side by side with the Apple iPad to find out.

Size

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab

No denying it: The iPad is a bit of a heifer. By laptop dimensions, 1.5 pounds sounds phenomenally light, but hold it in your hands for a while, and you’ll realize a 1.5-pound book starts to feel heavy fast. The Samsung Galaxy Tab drops weight to just 0.84 pounds, while shrinking by several inches in width and height as well, due to the smaller screen.

Price

Winner: To be determined

Apple shocked audiences at its iPad launch by announcing that the cheapest iPad would go for only $499, making it one of the most affordable items in the Apple catalog. While we still don’t have full pricing information for the Galaxy Tab, rumors suggest it may be equal or potentially even higher. Rumors have pointed to €699 ($890) for the 16GB version and €799 ($1,020) for the 32GB version, and converting the pre-tax Swedish price puts it around $930. But since it’s all complete hear-say for the moment, it remains to be seen whether the Galaxy Tab will really arrive at a competitive price point.

Speed

Winner: Draw

Comparing the Apple iPad and Galaxy Tab in the speed department at this point is a lot like comparing identical twins on the track: Clearly, one must be faster, but you know they’re going to be neck and neck, and they’ve yet to race. Apple’s A4 processor is derived from the same A8 Cortex CPU the Galaxy Tab uses, so they’re essentially family. In our comparison of the iPhone 4 and A8-powered Captivate, we had to declare a draw considering both seemed to excel in different areas. We’ll do the same here.

Screen

Winner: Apple iPad

As far as LCD screens go, the iPad sports one of the best in the business. Besides efficient LED backlighting and a generous 9.7-inch span, it uses in-plane switching (IPS) technology, which gives it a viewing angle unrivalled by the cheaper twisted-nematic (TN) screens used in most other devices. The Galaxy Tab offers a 16:9 display ratio, which is preferable for watching movies, but it also reduces resolution (from 1024 x 768 on the iPad to just 1024 x 600) and shrinks to just 7 inches across. Less resolution, smaller size, and inferior technology? I think we know which we would prefer to watch last week’s Mad Men on, thank you.

Camera

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab

How did Apple miss the boat on adding a camera to the iPad? You’ll have to ask Steve Jobs, but Samsung apparently has itself put together a little better. The Galaxy Tab includes both a 3-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing cam for videoconferencing. It will even capture 720p HD video. Samsung 1, Apple 0.

Battery

Winner: Apple iPad

Samsung hasn’t released full details on battery life from the Galaxy Tab just yet, but from what we know so far, the iPad looks like a winner here. The company claims its 4,000mAh battery will give the Tab seven hours of video playback, while Apple claims the iPad can do 10 – a claim we verified in our own testing. While that’s only one aspect of performance, we’re giving it to Apple until Samsung can defy expectations and outsurf or outread the long-lasting iPad.

Samsung Galaxy S II and Tab II official early

Samsung confirmed its Mobile World Congress plans early with details of its two flagships. The Galaxy Tab II is now slightly larger than the iPad it goes up against with a 10.1-inch, 1280x800 display much like the Motorola Xoom. It uses what should be a stock version of Android 3.0 and runs on a 1GHz (likely dual-core) processor that can record 1080p video from the rear eight-megapixel camera.

The Galaxy S II mostly fits recent expectations and centers on a dual-core 1GHz processor, a sharper 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, HSPA+ 3G and an eight-megapixel camera with 1080p video. It's now known to come with either 16GB or 32GB of included storage and to support mobile HDTV viewing, though in which countries wasn't mentioned.

Software will be a key factor as it will now have the same Music Hub and Readers Hub as the Galaxy Tab along with a Games Hub and the usual Social Hub. More details are expected to come from Samsung's press event in Barcelona this evening.

The Galaxy Tab II sets a potentially high hurdle for the next iPad, its main rival. Most now expect Apple to move to dual-core and to use much faster dual PowerVR SGX543 graphics that could achieve similar 1080p performance. A new iPad could be ready as soon as March or April and might leave Samsung just a short window in which to claim a performance lead.
