The leadership of DMK has promised to carry on their protests against what they called "foisting" of cases against party workers over accusations of usurping land.

It was in different parts of the state the protests were held and it was done as per the party's decision that was ratified at its recent general council meeting at Coimbatore. Among those who squared arrest today was DMK Treasurer M.K. Stalin.

The DMK leaders said that the Jayalalithaa Government was indulging in "political vendetta", and was preventing democratic protests, while police said the arrest were made for staging demonstrations without permission.

In reaction to the police action against today's agitation, Stalin said, "When DMK was in power there were no restrictions on such demonstrations, and we allowed the oppositions to hold protests."

In recent days, a number of DMK leaders have been arrested on charges of land-grabbing. Former agriculture minister and DMK's Salem strongman Veerapandi S.Arumugam, and MLA J.Anbazhagan forms the most prominent among the same.

It was contented by the Government that the special police cells set up across different districts are only acting on the basis of complaints received from people regarding the usurping of their land or property.

The DMK is under particular strain in the south of the state, were a number of associates of M.K. Alagiri, South zone co-coordinator of the party, have been arrested on charges of land grabbing.
