Google+ App For iPod touch And iPad Now Available Download

The Google+ iOS app has been updated today to support the previously “missing” iOS devices, the iPod touch and the iPad, just weeks after the original iPhone-only app wasunveiled. All iOS users are urged to download this update as soon as possible from their device’s App Store or iTunes.

Back when Google+ launched, many were disappointed about the lack of an iPhone app, which Google later addressed, but left iPad and iPod touch users in the cold.
In addition to iPad (not fully optimized interface) and iPod touch support, the new version of the iOS app includes minor new features that have been requested by some users, namely the ability to customize +Huddle, Google+’s instant messaging feature, aggregated circle add notifications and the same old “Performance and stability improvements”. These apply to every device, including the iPhone.

Indeed, this update changes the app’s settings screen with new settings allowing you to choose which circles should be displayed within the stream, as well as set which people can message you through +Huddle. Currently, you can choose to either let everyone do it, extended circles or just your circles.
Google+ is Google’s new attempt at succeeding in the social networking space, after the failure of Buzz and Google Wave before it. Instead of introducing brand-new paradigms, Google has taken features from other social networks and given them its own twist. Among the many features, several are prominent, such as +Circles, which allows for effortless management of contacts and their respective permissions; +Hangouts, which makes online multi-person video conversations easier than ever. As with any other social network, media and posts can easily be shared and appear on every follower’s “stream”. The social network has so far enjoyed a moderate amount of success, although usage has slowed down over the last few weeks.
Keep in mind that you will have to enter your Google+ login details again once you update this app since they seem to be “forgotten”. Aside from this slight annoyance, there are no other known side effects.

FBapp For iPhone & Status Via For Android Lets You Update Facebook Status From iPhone 5G, Air Force One, Hogwarts

Those via iPhone, via Blackberry status updates are starting to get boring now. While there is no escaping them since Facebook includes them along with their native apps, you can set yourself apart by customizing the via message.
We talked about how to do this from a web browser last week. If you wish to pull of the same trickery using an Android smartphone or an iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, we’ve got the solutions: Status Via for Android and FBapp for iOS device.
Status Via for Android



After downloading, installing and launching the app from the link posted at the end, you must log in to Facebook. Once logged in, you can pretend to be posting the status update from any of the 50 supported devices/places included in the app.

Status Via allows you to post status updates on Facebook under the guise of another device.
You’ve probably seen the "via Facebook for Android" and "via Facebook for iPhone" tags sitting underneath status updates. Well, you’ve probably also thought to yourself "Man, I wish I could have something a bit more… fulfilling in it’s place".

Status Via for Android lets you update your Facebook status via the following: Banana Phone, Google+, PS3, Tin Cans Connected by String, Gameboy Color, Telepathy, Air Force One, IPhone 5G, Xbox LIVE, SNES, NASA Satellite, The Future, Pokedex, Typewriter, Pip Boy. Hogwarts, BMW iDrive, IPod Nano, The Moon, Nintendo Wii, GLaDOS, K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand), Mind-Computer Interface among others.

The developer promises to add pretend-places/devices to the app if you leave a nice enough review. Status Via is a free app and it supports all Android devices running versions 1.6 and up. You can download it from the link embedded at the end of the post.
FBapp for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad

FBApp (pronounced as F-bap, supposedly) lets you pull off the same trickery from an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Unfortunately it isn’t as simple to use as Status Via as you will have to manually enter App IDs from the post Oliver wrote. This, however, comes with the added benefit of customizability: once you set up your own app on Facebook, you simply enter its ID on FBapp and update your status from there allowing you have full control over the via <App Name> message.

It’s a one time thing, really. I don’t expect people to get fooled over this many times. Still, it’s a nice way to make your friends awe at how you managed to “hack” Facebook.

iChair for iPad 2 looking for a | little Kickstarter love

In the last year, just about every iPad case or stand has made it to my office for a review. While I don't always write them up, I often show the products on TUAW TV Live. It doesn't matter what I'm showing; there's always someone for whom the product is perfect, and a lot of people liked the case that I'm writing about here. For people who want the protection of a case and the convenience of the stand, the iChair (no, not thehelmsman's chair from Norway) is one of the better designs I've seen.

We received one of the iPad cases and an iPhone 4 case earlier this month for review, and while the iPhone case was inadvertently used as a giveaway for our TUAW meetups, I still have the iPad case and decided to give it a try. Vindi Sedey, the CEO of iChair, is trying to get funding on Kickstarter to start manufacturing the iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch versions of the combo case and stand. At this point, he's quite a bit away from his goal of $15,000 worth of funding, but given the quality of the iChair for the original iPad, I thought I'd give the product a little push here on TUAW.

Features

The iChair for iPad (US$49.00) is a slider-type case made of a grippable hard plastic material on the outside, and lined with a soft velour material on the inside. That inside liner is unique to the iChair; I've found that many other cases of this type retain the hard material on the inside as well, and for some reason it often collects dust that ends up on the back of the iPad. The iChair material tends to remove the dust from the iPad, and I've found in testing that it also seems to keep dust from accumulating behind the iPad in the first place.

While the iChair is made of black plastic, the top is replaceable with an included extra cap. In the package I received, the second cap was a nice dark blue to create a two-tone case. When purchasing the iChair, there's a choice of the blue cap or a white one. The package also contains a screen protector to keep the iPad display from scratches. I personally like the thin design of the iChair. It doesn't add a lot of bulk to the iPad, unlike many of the other iPad stands and cases we've reviewed.

So where does the iChair get its name? From the fact that thanks to two small locking plastic tabs that snap out from the body of the case, the iChair can "sit up" in landscape or portrait orientation. When you're planning on doing some hardcore typing on the iPad, the iChair props up into a slight slant that's perfect for tapping on the virtual keyboard.

Conclusion

The iChair for iPad is thin, sturdy, and useful. At $49, it beats many competitive products on price, and the extra top cap gives the iChair a nice custom feel. If you'd like to see this product for iPad 2, be sure to visit the iChair Kickstarter page and consider backing the project
