2011 Black Friday on Thursday

2011 Black Friday on Thursday ...

Macy’s Inc. says it will open all of its namesake stores at midnight on the day after Thanksgiving for the first time. It becomes the latest retailer to extend hours on Black Friday, the traditional kickoff to the holiday season.

More than 800 Macy’s stores will stay open for 23 hours and close at 11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25. That compares with last year when Macy’s opened eight stores at midnight while the rest opened at 4 a.m.

Martine Reardon, Macy’s executive vice president of marketing, said the midnight openings are a response to customers’ requests.

“People want to shop through the night,” Reardon said.

In recent years, retailers have expanded their Black Friday hours and rolled out sales for the day weeks in advance. That’s in contrast to a few years ago when stores kept their discounts and hours secret until a few days before the Thanksgiving weekend. Retailers are responding to shoppers who like to map out their bargain-hunting strategies early.

Last year, Sears and Kmart stores opened Thanksgiving morning for the first time. Toys R Us stores opened at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Many Gap Inc. stores also were open. And Wal-Mart opened most of its stores by midnight that evening.

Target Corp. became one of the first retailers to announce its Black Friday hours this year. The discounter said on Friday that it would open its doors at midnight for the first time ever and offer Black Friday specials at that time. Like Macy’s, it plans to stay open 23 hours. More merchants are expected to announce their hours and deals for the Thanksgiving weekend in the next week or so.

Powerball $160 million jackpot

Powerball $160 million jackpot ...

A vacation to a cooler climate would make a lot of people feel better about the heat these days. And a nice potential financial windfall may be coming up for someone Wednesday night that just might make that happen.

There was no winner in last Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, so the jackpot has rolled over to $160 million for Wednesday evening. The lump sum payout will be $85.2 million.

The Powerball jackpot will be the highest since June 1st when a group of New York Costco workers won over $200 million. World Lottery News reports that four players matched five balls without the Powerball, and each collecting $250,000. None of them were from New Jersey.

But just a week earlier, our luck was a little better. Lottery.com reported that two l New Jersey players won Powerball’s second prize of $200,000 in the Saturday, July 23 drawing. One ticket was purchased in Camden County, at the One Stop Shoppe in Magnolia, and the other came from Hunterdon County, and was bought at Ringoes Country Deli.

CLICK HERE FOR POWERBALL WINNING NUMBERS

Lottery's Executive Director Carole Hedinger says each store receives a bonus check of $500 for selling the tickets.

Lottery Post reminds us that even if you don’t win, be sure and always check your tickets carefully, because millions of dollars in winning tickets are being allowed to expire every year. A $250,000 Mega Millions second prize expired last week, and on the same night as the $160 million Powerball drawing, a $900,000 winning ticket from Florida is scheduled to expire.

The biggest loser on record came from Connecticut in 1996, when Clarence Jackson from Connecticut turned in his winning ticket three days too late, missing a $5 million jackpot.
POWERBALL WINNING NUMBERS FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2011

(13, 19, 21, 28, 49 and Powerball: 11 x2)

ABC News reported that New Jersey Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman plans to introduce a bill that will give more people other means of checking their numbers. She wants to bring back live New Jersey lottery drawings on its public access channel, "to continue greater access for people.”

Barack Obama cheer up 50th birthday

Barack Obama cheer up 50th birthday ...

Barack Obama hasn't had much to cheer him up in the run-up to his 50th birthday – although he must wish his US poll ratings, currently 43% approval, outscored his years.

But the president – who in recent weeks was battered by the debt standoff that ended with a deal no one liked – seems determined to enjoy the milestone.

On Wednesday, he took aides to have burgers at an eatery on Capitol Hill before leaving Washington briefly for a campaign fundraiser in his adopted home town of Chicago. Supporters paid up to $38,500 to join him to hear him joke he would soon have a reminder from a national organisation that helps the over-50s have "independence, choice and control" in ways that "are affordable to them and society as a whole".

"By the time I wake up, I'll have an email from AARP asking me to call President Obama and tell him to protect Medicare," said Obama on the eve of his half-century. Happy birthday was inevitably sung, by a group from North Carolina, and there was music from Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go,a rock band originally from the windy city but now based in Los Angeles. Its presence presumably was not meant as a message for the president, rather encouragement to reignite in his re-election campaign the spirit that so memorably took him to the White House. He may, however, take hear from their new EP, All is Not Lost.

At a small dinner for high-dollar donors later, Obama revealed he already knew of one very important present waiting for him in back in Washington on Thursday. His oldest daughter, Malia, was coming home from camp to celebrate his birthday.

The festivities back in the capital were to include a toast from senior staff in the White House's blue room, followed by a party with family and friends. An administration official said the Obamas would be footing that bill.

The president then plans a weekend trip to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.
